Depression Cake gets its name because during the Great Depression ingredients such as eggs, milk and butter were to expensive. Combining ingredients such as vinegar and baking soda which helps the cake rise to create a dairy-free, vegan chocolate sweet treat that is still moist, fluffy and full of flavor.

You may also hear this cake called Wacky Cake or Crazy Cake. But the name Depression Cake or War Cake has stuck and now it is still loved as a delicious cake everyone loves.

Ingredients - Flour, sugar, cocoa powder, salt, baking soda, vanilla extract, vinegar, oil, water, butter, powdered sugar, milk
  • All-Purpose Flour – Measure flour in a measuring cup to ensure that the right amount is added.
  • Cocoa Powder – Make sure to choose the unsweetened Cocoa Powder

  • Vegetable Oil – You can also use canola oil
  • Butter – We used unsalted butter that has been melted
  • Vinegar – You can also use Apple Cider Vinegar or white vinegar

How to Make Depression Cake

  • Step 2 – In a large mixing bowl, stir together the all purpose flour, sugar, cocoa powder, salt and baking soda.

  • Step 1 – Stir together the butter and cocoa into a mixing bowl.
  • Step 2 – Add in the remaining ingredients and combine with a hand held mixer until the frosting is combined and smooth.
